Internal linking is the only ranking input you control completely, and it is the one most often left to a CMS default. This category inspects depth, orphaning, anchor quality and whether your most commercially important pages are actually treated as important by your own site.

Why it matters

An orphaned page receives no internal link equity and is discovered only through the sitemap, which is a much weaker discovery and importance signal. Orphans accumulate silently through migrations, redesigns, and content published without being linked from anywhere. They are common on large sites and consistently include pages the business believes are performing.

How we inspect it

We compute reachability across the internal link graph from the homepage, then compare against the sitemap and any URLs with recorded impressions. Anything indexable and unreachable is recorded as orphaned with its discovery source.

Remedy

  1. 1Generate the orphan list and cross-reference against commercial importance and existing impressions.
  2. 2Link each valuable orphan from a relevant hub, category or related-content module with descriptive anchor text.
  3. 3For orphans nobody can justify, consolidate or remove them rather than linking to them for the sake of it.
  4. 4Fix the systemic cause — usually a template that publishes without adding the page to any listing.
  5. 5Re-run reachability after every migration and redesign as a release gate.

Verification

Recheck recomputes reachability and confirms every priority URL is linked from at least one crawlable page.

Why it matters

Click depth is a strong proxy for perceived importance. Pages buried deep are crawled less often and inherit less internal equity, and users reach them less often too. Depth problems usually come from pagination — a product on page fourteen of a listing may be twenty clicks deep even though the catalogue is small.

We compute the shortest crawlable path from the homepage to every URL and cross-reference depth against commercial priority and impression data.

Remedy

  1. 1Map depth against commercial value and identify pages that are deep but valuable.
